Nutty as a Fruitcake

I wish you all could smell my kitchen right now. I'm making fruitcake for the first time ever, and I'm spreading the work out over a few days. The first couple days were spent gathering the ingredients. Who knew it would be so hard to find dried cherries and dried blueberries? Thank goodness for Whole Foods.
I'm using this recipe here. Last night I chopped up the dried fruits and let them soak in rum. I had to sample some of the fruits. Raisins soaked in rum for 24 hours are delicious! Just now, I added sugar, butter, spices, and apple juice and let it simmer on the stove. The kitchen smells heavenly. Hopefully the end product is worth all the work.

    Of course it will be!

Should you be interested in making a different kind of fruitcake, give my mom a call and find out when the Ye Olde Fruitcake Making Party is!

Ok, call me crazy, but I've never had fruitcake. I've only heard horror stories about them. Are homemade ones delicious?

I'm anticipating this homemade fruitcake to be full of deliciousness. Every last ingredient is something I'd eat on it's own - not a candied cherry to be seen.
